thaikhun newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre thai restaurant openAs I’m off this year for some amazing travels, including a trip to Thailand, I was delighted to receive an invite to the launch of the new Thaikhun in intu Metrocentre. It’s just the right prelude to a year of foreign adventures.

thaikhun newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre thai restaurant openThe new Thaikhun is now open in the foodie hall that is the yellow cube in intu Metro Centre. There’s plenty of great eateries on that strip and due to the great lighting, ‘outdoor’ seating areas and atmosphere, it doesn’t feel like you’re right in the middle of a shopping centre.

thaikhun newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre thai restaurant openWe headed along to the launch night to discover more about this Thai Street Food restaurant.

thaikhun newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre thai restaurant openWe were immediately surprised by the venue. Something you just don’t expect to walk into from intu Metro Centre. The place was buzzing, vibrant and the decor was just stunning, with apparently the owner picking up the pieces actually from the streets of Bangkok.

You could be seated near the kitchen and chefs amongst all the hustle and bustle (very street foodie), in the ‘Bangkok Warehouse’ or what seems to be a cosier more quiet day-time street scene.

thaikhun newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre thai restaurant openWe were spoilt when we arrived with cocktails and drinks galore. What’s fantastic about Thaikhun, is that even the drinks reflect what’s available in Thailand. There’s everything from themed Thai cocktails, tropical fruit juices and other authentic drinks such as Thai Green Tea.

We sampled a few cocktails; I recommend the Bangkok Chill and the boy picked the refreshing Chang beer. We gulped down a very sweet Thai Iced Tea – he loved it, but it was way too sugary for me as it’s made with condensed milk. We also tried a Pennywort Juice, which is meant to be very good and healthy for you. You can view the full drinks menu here.

thaikhun newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre thai restaurant openOnto the food! We were lucky to be given a selection of their finest dishes, which is a great way to sample a mix of what’s on the menu. Our starters included Moo Dao Deow – deep fried pork strips, Plamuk Tod Prik Kleur – deep fried squid, Tod Man Pla – fish cakes and Por Pia Gai – chicken spring rolls. All delectable and impressively displayed. They came with some hot chilli sauce and sweet chilli sauce, perfect for dipping.

The salad was too spicy for me but the red and green curry were just right. The pork was delicious and the thai green curry was lovely. Usually I’m underwhelmed by green curry in restaurants but I devoured this. There’s plenty more on the menu to choose from. I was already eyeing up what I wanted on my return.

Overall, a great first impression. Our waiter was quite simply adorable and the other staff there were incredibly welcoming and friendly.

They had lots of lovely touches too, with big birthday sing songs for those coming on their special day.

barburrito new newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre yellow mall burrito mexicanThe Mexican eatery has set up within the Yellow mall and is one of the first brand new food venues to open up. Keep an eye out at intu Metrocentre, as more restaurants will be opening up soon including Thaikhun and Five Guys.

barburrito new newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre yellow mall burrito mexicanBarburrito is a independent chain that focuses on fresh burritos, made fast to eat in or have on the go. You move along the burrito bar as they make up your meal, with the choices you make, for example how spicy you’d like the salsa to be, what type of beans you want and your filling option.

barburrito new newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre yellow mall burrito mexicanI was invited to a fanastic bloggers night, the day before the Official launch to try it out. It was my first time at a Barburrito, though they have (currently) 13 venues all across the country, with more to be opened soon.

barburrito new newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre yellow mall burrito mexicanRather than just hand us over a burrito, the night was great, with staff welcoming us initially with some tasty nachos and drinks, before giving us a sample of everything on their menu.

barburrito new newcastle gateshead intu metrocentre yellow mall burrito mexicanWhat’s wonderful about their menu is they cater for lots of intolerances and allergies, as you can make your burrito up as you go along with whatever suits your diet. Plus, there’s some halal choices and everything is completely free of preservatives!

We then got to practice rolling up a burrito – there’s an art to it, before tackling making our own behind the burrito bar.

The homemade guacamole is a must. The ingredients tasted incredibly fresh – apparently, they start from scratch each day to make sure everything you eat is as fresh as possible. Here’s me standing proud with my own freshly made burrito!
